Golmud is a practical base for exploring the southern Qaidam Basin, where salt-lake scenery meets the approach to the Kunlun Mountains. Its excursions cover substantial distances, so choose a clear focus for each day.
Qarhan’s pale salt formations and colored brine create a landscape unlike the city streets. The mountain route south offers a very different experience; the two deserve separate planning rather than a hurried circuit.
Keep the city as your starting point for arranging transport and supplies. Remote viewpoints, high passes and protected areas require more preparation than a short urban outing.
